Educational Programs
Visual environmental education, often also referred to as community appearance education, is multifaceted and includes aspects of science, social science, art, architecture, design, conservation, preservation and community planning. Visual environmental education is concerned with promoting an understanding that each of us individually and as a community can make informed choices about community appearance and implement them.

The Dunn Foundation is committed to promoting educational activity related to visual environmental awareness, particularly in young people. The Foundation seeks opportunities to increase the impact of visual environmental education through identifying programs and organizations and linking them with students and teachers. Through tools such as the Internet, publications and workshops, and curriculum guides, the Foundation seeks to create a national education network dedicated to promoting a sense of pride in our communities appearance.

The Dunn Foundation has a broad national focus on education related to the visual environment and community appearance. Our education programs focus on but are not limited to school-aged children and educators. The Foundation’s unique educational model includes elementary, middle and high school elements carefully aligned to state and national education standards.

  • Developing and publishing curricula and other educational materials relevant to the visual and built environments, and community appearance.
  • Identifying and helping to promote education materials and programs related to the visual environment and community appearance.
  • Developing regional and national networks to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas.
  • Providing financial assistance to non-profit organizations and schools developing or implementing relevant curricula through the Foundation’s grant program.

To meet these goals, the Foundation has developed a series of educational initiatives. These include the ViewFinders educational materials, ViewMakers service learning project models, and ViewSeekers training sessions.
